I LOVE Harajuku style! It almost reminds me of Gwen Stafani! It's trendy chic...but it is an aquired taste. People may BS them now...but watch...sooner than not...the world will be wearing these styles! By then, it'll be played out in Harajuku and they'll have moved on to bigger and better trends! =)

With one of our biggest customers being in the fashion industry, I was granted the priviage of sitting in on a photo shoot. The head of admissions from the customer's location had actually invited me to join her and the designers for a luncheon and I was thrilled to go. To my surprise, one of the designers was from Harajuku, Japan; which meant of course that she brought Harajuku girls with her to model the latest trends. I honestly have to say that it was the most exciting and neatest experience that I've ever had. It's funny how looks are deceiving, because the girls look a certain way, but they are so shy, quiet, and quite modest about what they are wearing. The Japanese culture is quite strict and these girls were the most polite and proper people that I've ever met in my entire life! "It's just the way we express ourselves. Everyone in Harajuku does it, so we fit right in. To us, this is normal." Oh my gosh, that was quite an experience and I can't wait until I take my trip there to experience the fashion scene first hand! "It's about staying on top of the trends. Doing what people won't expect of you. We are all unique and uniquely different." Yes, that they are! Harajuku, you really do have style!

Cosplaying as the visual kei artists has become a part of the Harajuku "style", not that there is actually a "style" associated with Harajuku other than dressing how you feel expresses you. - Gwen Stefani may be an idiot, but she's a very successful idiot who has a lot of talent. Personally, I think she is great. I agree she needs to let this Harajuku thing DIE because she is pretty much pimping it out and acting like she discovered it, but other than that, I like her. - Also, to the one that called the thin girl fat... d00d, what are you smoking? She's HOT.

That is not Harajuku style. Every Sunday, Japanese kids dress up to be seen, its like going to a fancy dress party except in the streets.
I've seen plenty of Harajuku kids dress to impress every Sunday, but unfortunately, the impact is sub par. The reason why so many major fashion designers dont come from Japan/Harajuku to seek inspiration, is because what they display on these Sundays is not considered fashion, but rather a flamboyant expression of self and merely an attempt to be seen or even 'discovered'.
Japanese fashion has never been like Western fashion, since high influence from Western countries, the Japanese fashion scene has changed and attempted to not only keep up but even try to set their own fashions for the Western world. But for those who have in fact been to Japan and seen it for yourself, its pretty obvious why it has had no such luck.
REAL Harajuku fashion/style holds little weight in the fashion world because most of the people attempt to mix and match different styles together, however, do so in a very unsuccessful way.
After reading some of the comments, I have to say, you should all buy yourselves a return ticket to Japan and experience what the real Japanese fashion scene is, dont always believe what you see in the media.
Also, on a side note, if Gwen Stefani loved the supposed 'Harajuku style' why did she need to ask Vivienne Westwood to design her outfits for her music video? Surely it would have been cheaper just to buy some of the outfits available in Harajuku while she was out in Japan? Hmm...
Also about the girl on the right, shes not thin, shes has a chubby belly, but theres little fat anywhere else - in other words thats puppy fat, all teenage girls get it, the only difference is, her PVC/rubber top doesnt exactly compliment it.

I would love to see people just drop all this crap about Gwen Stephani. I haven't watched the music video, I have no desire to, and realy, I get annoyed when people see me dressing up in my gothic lolit outfits and go "Hey! It's the Gwen Stephani look!" Realy, I want to bash their heads in. And there's actualy several styles going on in Harajuku. Harajuku just happens to be the area where all these styles are shown off. And as Vivvy said, it's done on sundays, and not the rest of the week. There are very few fasion lines catering to the Harajuku stuff, and they aren't widly known either. It's just something fun to do, every once in a while. And realy, people should stop bitching about the poor girl's figure. Most likely, the majority of the people saying she's fat or whatever have inferiority complexes of her own. Personaly, I think she looks good. And I'm tired of people trying to force everyone into being these little skin-and-bones, holocaust-looking people. It's annoying, and it's not very beautiful. There. My rant for the day is done. I am going to go live my life, and to hell to anyone who wants to preted to be offended by me.

i think we all saw this happen with avril lavigne..anyone who wore a tie in the following year was a "skater wannabe": even your grandpa. ive lived here a year and love it more than anywhere in the world. ive always been a "lets dress up and have fun" kinda kid and when i lived in london i was called so many horrible things just for expressing self with colourful tights and the like. in the states too its all about the ab & fitch and theres not too much room for anything else. But here..man i go crazy and noone acts like im something sent from satan, the only abuse i get is from the occasional small-minded foreigner... but theyre the ones wearing the moss green sweaters and khacki pants so i just tend to feel sorry that they so envy anyone trying to not take themselves so seriously. and the beauty of harajuku kids is that they dont give two shits about the worlds new found interest in them..they did it before the hype, and theyll do it after everyones forgotten and found another bleach blonde to lead them by the hands.
also who cares about the girl in the bondage? she has more guts than anyone sitting behind their computer typing away...even i dont think i could get up the nerve to wear that out! oh and one more thing, the showcase is on sunday but you can actually see those kids takeshita dori every day..theyre an interesting breed, but then so are the old ladies who dye their hair purple and green. gwen hasn't caught onto that one yet though so shhh......
and to anyone who lives in tokyo and wants to dress up and go with a small group of us...email me

Fashion and self expression are two very different things.
I think alot of what Harajuku kids wear is very creative, but its clear where their influence has come from, Europe and the USA. Particularly Europe if you've had the chance to see more of it.
What they are wearing is, like I said before, a flamboyant expression of self, but more likely than not, an attempt to be seen on an extreme level, and it works.
'Goths' do the exact same thing, partly to be seen and stand out and partly to express themselves, however, their clothing is not considered fashion, although gothic style has influenced the fashion scene.
Vivienne Westwoods' fashion is often critercised, but not because her designs arent worthy of the title 'fashionable' but rather, because alot of her designs are siggestive, after all, she always did say that sex is a big part of fashion.
As for the one on the right being fat, like I said, to me it looks like puppy fat around her stomach, its not a big deal, but I guess, when your living in a very superficial world, it matters to some. Also, never believe all the statistics given for each country. The UK has been dubbed the fattest country in Europe, although I agree that there are alot of over weight people in the country, I question how the government got hold of weights for each individual person when most havent announced their weight since birth. Statistics on clothe sizes sold arent very reliable either, since taller people will buy larger sized clothing etc. The same applies to the USA, once again statistics claim 1 in 3 Americans are obese. If you visit places such as Florida then its easy to believe such statistics, but if you travel to L.A, N.Y and California, the scene is very different.
I would love to be able to go back to Harajuku and have the chance to express myself this way, people in the Western culture are sceptical about such ideas. I would have liked to have known about this unique subculture before I went there.

PS - even though sum1 (soz cant remember who) said that this wasn't Harajuku, i still think these girls look cool. they got the guts 2 show it so i think we should just say well done 2 u! i'm gonna go now though bcoz i'm rabitin on + i should b doin an ICT exam so byeee

If anyone else quotes Gwen Stefani on "Harajuku girls" I'm going to scream. First of all that song is shit, don't get me wrong, I really like Gwen Stefani, but honestly she spent what, like a month in Japan and thinks she knows everything about 'Harajuku girls' and proclaims herself there biggest fan. If that werent annoying in itself, she seems to overlook some key facts. The fashions that are seen in Harajuku (on sundays, not every freakin day like she leads people to beleive) are of such a wide variety, we really have no idea what the fuck shes talking about. Overall her little Harajuku phase is really annoying and I think she should stop trying to be "Harajuku".
And to comment on the picture and say that girl is fat..is dumb, your probably a porker so I'd stfu. And In my opinion she looks pretty adorable. I dont even wanna know what you would pay to be with a girl half as pretty as that.

I agree with Hoshi's comment. Gwen Stefani is a great singer and all, but she should practice what she preaches a bit more. She is encouraging people to go to Tokyo, or anywhere in Japan, and acting like she's an expert on anything Japanese, but she hardly knows anything.
Also, the comment on the girl being fat. She doesn't need to be thin to be beautiful - she is already beautiful and she looks happy as she is. She also must be very confident, which is also a very sexy thing in a woman. Good for her!

haha, yeah i did go to the site, actually ive seen it before and its pretty wicked. and i would be very dissapointed to find they are americans. It makes me sad to think racist trash like that still resides in this country -_- And i totally agree, this is a page to discuss photos and fashion of tokyo, if you don't like fashion, japan,or anything creative for that matter, then maybe you should find something more suiting to your personal interests? oo i know a radical idea...try it you might be much happier. If anyone is interested in talking my AIM is mngaprincess...and if your one of those assholes...dont bother.

Why are people saying that Harajuku isn't fashion? How the fuck do you know what fashion is? Did someone die and made you the damn authority on those things? Anyway, if you don't like it, don't look at it. Close your damn eyes! Because no one cares if you don't like it. When everyone was going through their "punk" stage, I couldn't complain because people have a right to buy whatever hell clothes they want and no one has the right to try and stop them!
And so what if people imitate Harajuku?
Tell me who owns the copyright to it and then you can talk shit.
Maybe you think it's a freak style but I'm sure there's someone out there who thinks your clothes suck!

Personally, I don't consider cosplay fashion. Harajuku is, and this technically isn't Harajuku. Dressing up in costumes isn't 'fashion', fashion is something you can wear all the time--not just at a convention on Sunday. Otherwise, yeah, the girl on the right is too big to be wearing that. o_O;; Shut the fuck up about society and its askew pereception on weight, fact of the matter: she should not be wearing that. Not the best cosplayers, either.

Actually, ARE most Harajuku trends fashion? I mean technically since Sunday is also the only day they can dress up, how can it be considered fasion? It's more costume than anything, if you think about it. But maybe that's just because Japanese teens have to wear uniforms every other day of the week? o_O It's confusing...

I respect your opinions, but I think anything you wear anytime can be considered fashion. I love dressing up in my own homemade clothes, but i dont do it every day...so that makes it not fashion? I def. think cosplay could be considered fashion also...its wearable..its artistic...y the hell not?
and honestly i think that outfit looks fine on her, its people like you who take magazine adds and billboards with anorexic women to heart, that makes this society shitty.
